MAY MEETING: ANNUAL GOLF OUTING
LOCUST HILLS GOLF COURSE
Third Tuesday, 21 May
LOCUST HILLS GOLF COURSE
Third Tuesday, 21 May
It’s time for the annual golf outing. We will be at Locust Hills GC in Springfield on Tuesday, the 21st of May. Registration will be from 1000 until 1045, followed by a rules briefing and a shotgun start at 1100 (Note the Times). After the golf we will award the golf and door prizes and feast on a delicious pork and chicken dinner (between 4:00 and 4:30). Mark the date and come out to join us. You don’t have to be a good golfer, the objective is BIG FUN, little prizes and everyone gets something. The price is reasonable ($60) for golf and dinner. You can also sign up yourself or a guest for dinner only ($15) So be sure to sign up! There will be a Formation Invitation sent out, but you can sign up now by emailing me at [email protected]. Please include your handicap or estimated average score. Those who have already signed up with Jim DeStout are covered.
STANDARD DEBRIEF ITEMS: LAST FLIGHT LEG (16 April): The April meeting was a dinner meeting at the Holiday Inn Fairborn on 16 April. We had a delicious buffet with Apple Brine Pork Loin with Apple Brandy Sauce, Brisket with Au Jus, Market Garden Salad, Country Green Beans, Garlic Mashed Potatoes, Rolls and Butter, and Chocolate Spoon Cake/Cheesecake with Strawberry Sauce (the Chocolate cake should be illegal). We were particularly happy to have our Flight Chaplain K9 back with us to give the invocation after a bit of an absence. Acting Flight Captain for the evening Jim DeStout announced that at the Annual National meeting last week, Flight 9 not only won again this year the Jimmy Doolittle (very fitting seeing this was the topic of our evening presentation) award for best “C” category flight, but also won the Top Flight overall, beating out all the other category winners.
After dinner, Flight member BGen (ret) Paul Cooper gave us a great presentation on the Doolittle Raiders. On 18 April 1942, the Doolittle Raiders flew their daring raid in the bombing of Japan, increasing the morale of all Americans. One of the more interesting revelations from Paul’s presentation was that the original plan was to have Doolittle take off alone and drop incendiaries on Tokyo at dusk, with the other Raiders to follow hours later, the fires guiding the way. However, the early discovery of the Hornet by a Chinese picket ship forced a change to the plan, and they all went together.
